It has been a busy week so far, I’ve had little time to be on the computer. Between getting the gardens ready for planting and getting everything ready to start the poultry fence, kids and appointments it’s been hectic. Leighton worked last night and slept for a bit this morning so we planned to start the fence this afternoon. We had just gotten started and he was called out on a fire call (he is a volunteer firefighter for our local department). Hopefully we will continue tomorrow 🙂
I was able to get our raised beds ready for planting, now we just wait for some warmer weather.
The big garden needs a lot of work, hopefully we will get started on that this weekend.
Lori and I went and picked up 7 more black Orpington’s, this is the last bunch we will be buying. These are from a different gene pool so we can maintain two separate flocks for breeding.
Do you see the little yellow chick? Well obviously that’s not an Orpington, that is another one of my chicks that hatched out under my Dorking Momma. He hatched out of one of the three eggs I left under her, unfortunately when he hatched (2 days after his siblings) Momma had gone to eat and his brothers and sisters were stepping all over him, he was cold and barely breathing when I brought him in the house and put him under the heat lamp, but he pulled though. I tried to bring him back to his Mom, but again his siblings were not very loving, they kept pecking him. So he’s living with the Orpington’s who have accepted him. 🙂
If you want to see more pictures of our little rescue chick check out our Facebook page!
Out of 9 eggs, six chicks hatched out, one died in hatching and two never hatched. Not my best hatch but not my worst either.
How is your week going?
