After getting another Hydro bill telling us our rates are going up, AGAIN, Leighton and I started discussing our energy use. Ideally, we would like to be off-grid, but since it is not something we can achieve in the near future, we are looking at other ways to limit our power usage.
We have decided to stop using our dryer, at least for the summer (June through August).
We have a beautiful clothesline we already use most of the time, but every now and then (me especially), I get a bit lazy and throw the clothes in the dryer.
So, starting yesterday (I meant to post this yesterday, June 1) we are no longer using our dryer.
When the weather is nice our clothes will dry on the line, and if we have a stretch of wet weather (like right now) we will dry our clothes inside. We dried A’s cloth diapers inside during the winter by hanging them on the backs of our chairs overnight, and they are dry in the morning.
Other options include setting up an indoor drying rack, but we hope to take advantage of Mother Nature. Since we usually only do our laundry on Saturday and Sunday, when rates are lower, we only have to worry about hanging out the clothes on the weekend (hopefully we have warm sunny weekends all summer long).
The exception is A’s diapers, those we wash every three to four days in the evenings (when rates go down), they dry overnight on chairs or the next day on the clothesline.
How do you save on electricity? Do you use your dryer?
