After waiting a few months, my ducks showed no signs of going broody. We ended up hatching ducklings using the incubator because I had given up on my Momma ducks.
I went out the other morning and found three of my ducks had made nests and were sitting.
They get very upset if I get close. This duck is all puffed up and she will hiss at me.
One is sitting on 12 eggs, the other two have eight under each of them. So hopefully in 28 days we will have lots of little ducklings.
Once I realized that the ducks were sitting I decided to sell the 5 Pekin ducklings that we had hatched. We don’t need that many ducks and ducklings. They sold very quickly and I have had a number of requests for more, so I will be hatching out more Pekin eggs to sell.
The eggs under the three ducks will be Rouen and Rouen/Pekin crosses. So they should be good dual purpose ducks, we hope to use the drakes for meat and the hens for laying.
Having raised ducklings both in a brooder and with their mothers, I can tell you from experience, it is much easier to let the mother’s do all the work for you. They do a great job and I don’t have to clean the brooder out every day :).
Enjoy the weekend!
