New and exciting things are happening on the homestead. Last week was busy and we are still catching up from the few days that we were away (more on that in a future post).
We have another set of eggs in the incubator, we are hoping for a better hatch rate this time around.
We have ordered our meat chickens, they should be arriving August 12. They will be housed in the chicken tractor as well.
The garden is taking off, we have been getting some very warm days with plenty of rain, perfect growing weather. The beans are ready to be picked and we have zucchini, carrots, beets, peas and turnips all ready.
I have been experimenting with sprouting our own grains to supplement the chicken and duck feed. So far it is working wonderfully, and requires little equipment or time. The chickens and ducks love it, time will tell if it reduces our feed bill.
Some of the eggs that the Rouen duck was sitting on hatched, we have 4 new ducklings. Hopefully more eggs will be hatching soon, we still have two ducks sitting. It was very hard to get a picture as Mom duck is not very trusting. They are in a small pen on their own since Mom was more concerned with staying with the other ducks instead of taking care of her little ones. Now that she is on her own with the ducklings she is settling into her mothering role.
On the agenda this week is more weeding, harvesting and hopefully freezing some carrots. I plan on making freezer meals this week and getting organized to go back to work, which means I have to find my meal menus 🙂
What’s on your to-do list this week?
