If you have been following along on our journey to self-sufficiency you may have noticed a decrease in the amount of posts recently. I can assure you that we are all well and good, but we are entering into our 'busy season' and it is getting harder and harder for me to find the time to write. We have a lot of projects on the go, and I'm getting … [Read more...]
Sharing a Garden – Part 3
We've been gone for a few days on a family camping trip but are home again now and are getting back into the regular routine. This week we are visiting my sister Koryn's garden. Koryn and her husband have a small acreage where they have a lovely garden plot. They have expanded this year to be able to put in more of the vegetables their family … [Read more...]
Sharing a Garden – Part 2
Next, we are visiting my sister Lori's garden. Lori and I live very close (within walking distance) and we plan and plant our gardens together. Because Lori doesn't have a large area to plant in her yard we usually plant a large crop of potatoes, along with the vegetables that her family eats daily. Visiting Lori's farm is truly a unique … [Read more...]
Sharing a Garden – Part 1
There are many different reasons why people may decide to share a garden. For us and our family it allows for diversity in the vegetables that we have access to, and allows us to share some of the workload. Between my sisters and my mother we have five gardens on the go, all beautiful and unique. Over the next week or so I would like to share … [Read more...]
Saving Money on Chicken Feed
Along with sprouting grain for our chickens and ducks, Leighton quickly assembled this simple setup to grow our own feed in the chicken and duck pen. We are always looking for ways to reduce our feed bill, especially when organic feed is so pricey. With this simple feeding setup we are creating a 'salad' bar for our flock that they love. I had … [Read more...]

To celebrate we are giving away a size 2 Mojito AppleCheeks Swim Diaper (fits 20-35lbs). We use this swim diaper for A and love it for both … [Read more...]
First Cochin Chick
Our first Cochin chick has hatched in the incubator, so far only one out of the five eggs have hatched, not a great hatch rate again. Since there is only one so far I decided to try to have one of the Dorking hens adopt the chick, this is the first time that I am trying this. The timing is right since the Dorking had been sitting on duck eggs … [Read more...]
Hunting for Old Fence
This morning Lori and I went out to our parents place to look for some old fence, specifically barbed wire fencing. There are a lot of old fence lines on the property and the majority have barbed wire somewhere in them. I've had some requests for more dragonfly's and needed some more barbed wire to finish them. Want to make your own barbed … [Read more...]
Around the Homestead
New and exciting things are happening on the homestead. Last week was busy and we are still catching up from the few days that we were away (more on that in a future post). We have another set of eggs in the incubator, we are hoping for a better hatch rate this time around. Leighton finished the chicken tractor, it is awesome and already has … [Read more...]
Best DIY Poultry Watering System
This month Leighton has been working on the watering system in our chicken and duck run. We are trying to make our system more self-sufficient and wanted to include rain water as the main source of water for this setup. I am impressed with how it has turned out and how quickly the birds found it and started using it, it is the best … [Read more...]
